Types of Stone

The name “Vosges Sandstone” is used for various varieties of sandstone which generally belong to a specific geological classification. Howerer, the types of sandstone with the best mechanical characteristics, the most attractive textures and the most shimmering colours are either Voltzia sandstone (or also know as millstone sandstone), or Vosges sandstone (geological classifications). Voltzia sandstone has a fine grain ; the most common colours are variegated red, white (or greeny-white), yellow (or yellow-white), and red-grey. They are mined in our Adamswiller, Lohr and Volksberg quarries. Vosges sandstone has a coarser grain ; the most common colours are bright pink (or pink with white specks), and light beige-white with yelleow ochre marbling. They are mined in our Rothbach and Steinseltz quarries. Thanks to current production facilities, mining and manufacture have become much easier. Nevertheless, a very worked stone is still cut entirely by hand.
